Campfire Cheeseburger Hobo Packets

Ingredients (serves 4):

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of cheddar or American cheese
  • 2 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 hamburger buns (optional for serving)
  • Ketchup, mustard, pickles, etc. for toppings

Instructions:

  1. Prep your packets:
Cut 4 large pieces of heavy-duty foil (or double layer regular foil). Spray lightly with nonstick cooking spray or brush with a little oil.
  2. Make the patties:
Mix the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form 4 equal burger patties.
  3. Assemble:
    On each foil square, layer:

    • A handful of thin potato slices
    • A few onion (and bell pepper) slices
    • A burger patty on top
    • Drizzle with a bit of olive oil
    • Season with more salt & pepper if you like
  4. Seal it up:
Fold foil tightly around everything, making sure it’s sealed well.
  5. Cook:
    • Campfire or grill: Place on hot coals or grill over medium heat for 30–35 mins, flipping halfway.
    • Oven: Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 35–40 mins, or until potatoes are soft and burgers cooked through.
  6. Add cheese:
Carefully open the packets, place a slice of cheese on the patty, re-seal loosely, and let sit for a few minutes to melt.
  7. Serve:
Eat straight from the packet or slide onto buns with your favorite toppings!

🌟 Pro Tips:

  • Use pre-cooked bacon bits for extra flavor
  • Swap potatoes for sweet potatoes
  • Add a little BBQ sauce or ranch before sealing for a flavor bomb
