Amish Cinnamon Bread (No Starter Needed)
Ingredients:
For the batter:
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk (see substitute below)
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
For the cinnamon sugar swirl:
- 1/3 cup (65g) granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add buttermilk, flour, and baking soda. Mix until just combined – don’t overmix!
- In a small bowl, mix the cinnamon and sugar for the swirl.
- Pour half the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle half the cinnamon-sugar mix on top.
- Add the rest of the batter, then top with remaining cinnamon-sugar.
- Use a knife to swirl the cinnamon sugar into the batter (gently, don’t overdo it).
- Bake for 45–55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
🥛 Buttermilk Substitute:
If you don’t have buttermilk, mix 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice. Let sit 5–10 mins before using.
