My dad requests it for every birthday and my grandmother\u2019s famous recipe is safely stowed in every family member\u2019s recipe box. Because my dad\u2019s side of the family does in fact hail from Germany, I never questioned the assumption that German Chocolate Cake was, well\u2026 German. So, you can imagine my surprise when I learned that was not the case!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">2 cups all purpose flour<\/li>\n<li>2 cups white sugar<\/li>\n<li>\u00bc cup cocoa powder<\/li>\n<li>1 cup water<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup butter (1 stick)<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup shortening<\/li>\n<li>4 oz German baking chocolate<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup buttermilk<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon baking soda<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd teaspoon salt<\/li>\n<li>2 eggs<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon vanilla<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FROSTING<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>12 oz can evaporated milk<\/li>\n<li>3 egg yolks<\/li>\n<li>\u00be cup butter<\/li>\n<li>1 cup sugar<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup brown sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 \u00bd cups shredded coconut<\/li>\n<li>1 \u00bd cups pecans, roughly chopped<\/li>\n<li>1 \u00bd teaspoons vanilla<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How To Make German Chocolate Sheet Cake<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and grease a sheet pan.<\/li>\n<li>In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, and cocoa powder.<\/li>\n<li>In a small saucepan, add the water, butter, shortening, and chocolate. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Once the mixture is smooth and fully combined, add it to the dry ingredients and whisk to combine.<\/li>\n<li>Stirring between each addition, first add the buttermilk, baking soda, salt, eggs, and then vanilla.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer batter to the prepared sheet pan and bake for 20-22 minutes. Let cool before frosting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FROSTING<\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>Add the milk, egg yolks, butter, and sugars to a medium sized saucepan over medium heat. Bring mixture to a boil and then lower heat to a simmer. Stir frequently and continue cooking for 10-12 minutes or until mixture has thickened. Remove from heat.<\/li>\n<li>Stir in coconut, pecan, and vanilla.<\/li>\n<li>Let frosting cool slightly and then spread over the cooled cake.<\/li>\n<li>Chill for 1-2 hours, then serve.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>German Chocolate Sheet Cake has been a favorite dessert in my family for as long as I can remember.
