These Scalloped Potatoes are creamy, cheesy, and so simple to make! With layers of tender potatoes, rich sauce, and melty cheese, this dish is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

– 4 large russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8-inch thick)
– 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
– 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
– 2 cups whole milk
– 1 cup heavy cream
– Salt and pepper, to taste
– 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
– 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
– 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or Gruyère for a twist), divided
– 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
– Fresh parsley or chives, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

2. Make the creamy sauce:
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk for 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste and begins to lightly bubble (but not brown). Gradually pour in the milk and cream, whisking constantly until smooth. Continue to cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

3. Add the cheese to the sauce:
Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar and the Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.

4. Layer the potatoes and sauce:
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly. Layer the remaining potatoes on top, then pour the rest of the cheese sauce over them.

5. Add the remaining cheese:
Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

6. Bake:
Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

7. Garnish and serve:
Let the Scalloped Potatoes cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives.
